we’ll come
together for the RYBOVICH WELCOMING COCKTAIL PARTY & CLAM BAKE!
Join us for cocktails, a Clam Bake and camaraderie
at our informal
party in Mystic Seaport’s weathered and wonderful old Boat Shed . The
party
will start around 6 and will run thru the wee hours. The Clam
Bake plans
are underway with prices ranging from about $30 up to around $60 for
‘the
works’ including a 1-1/4 pound lobster! It’s the perfect
opportunity to
catch up with old friends & make new ones before the boat show
begins. You'll be getting the clambake sign up sheet soon.
SATURDAY,
July
23: THE CLASSIC BOAT
SHOW, from
9am-5pm
Here’s
an opportunity to get lost in vintage and classic wooden boats—Great
Gatsby
all the way! 2500 visitors will arrive to view the
presentation of
vintage Rybo’s, this year’s 2011 Marquee Class.
The judging of some
of the country’s most beautiful and authentically maintained wooden
boats will
be ongoing from 10am till 2:30. Along with an abundance of
food and
activities the entire family will enjoy, you’ll have a chance to
appreciate
over 50 vintage and classic yachts with a close-up view of the
craftsmanship
that went into each of my dad’s creations. The meticulously
maintained classic
Rybovich with their gleaming mahogany, teak decks and polished
stainless steel
will take you back in time to the world of Rybo in her glorious and
heady 1950s
heyday.
RYBOVICH
BOOK PRESENTATION: During
the cocktail
hour I’m thrilled to share the Rybovich to a crowd of hundreds as we
celebrate
vintage Rybovich: Mystic Seaport’s 2011
Marquee Class! As the pages are projected on a wide screen,
I’ll share the
behind-the-scenes story of the boatyard and each & every Rybo
on display at
the dock. After the presentation, join us at the "Rum-Runner
Dinner Dance" hosted by Mystic Seaport. ($50 per
person) As
rum-runners were a colorful part of the Rybovich history of the 1930s,
if the
idea appeals, we’ll dress in Roaring Twenties
style! All evening
Rybovich owners & enthusiasts will gather together and we’ll
raise a glass
to celebrate the winners at the official Awards
Ceremony.

THE PARADE OF BOATS Expect to hear the throaty roar of exhaust pipes as the classic boats leave the harbor for their three-mile parade down the historic Mystic River. While visitors line the shore to admire the breathtaking sight of a time gone by, each boat’s name will be announced as she passes through Mystic’s famous Bascule Bridge. As we enjoy the weekend’s “grand finale” and look back at a Rybovich weekend to remember filmmakers will capture the Rybovich regatta—priceless footage to be showcased in the upcoming Rybovich documentary.
WHAT
TO SEE & DO AT MYSTIC SEAPORT
The
Museum of America and the Sea http://www.mysticseaport.org/
With
17 acres
filled with nautical history, The Museum of America and the Sea is
America's
leading maritime museum. Explore American maritime history first-hand
as you
climb aboard historic tall ships, stroll through a re-created
19th-century
coastal village or watch a working preservation shipyard in action.
Your
$24
ticket
covers the entire weekend Boat Show, plus the expansive
17 acre Museum of America and the Sea (details about the Museum, below)

Mystic
Seaport’s 500+ Historic Vessels From the world’s last
surviving wooden whaleship, the
1841 Charles W. Morgan, to the last example of
early 20th century New
England fishing vessels, even the most confirmed landlubber will be
thrilled to
board Mystic Seaport’s historic vessels. Or take a cruise
along the
historic Mystic River aboard Mystic Seaport’s 100-year-old steamboat!

19th Century Village is the
place where you can find
numerous shops where workers restore antique vessels using traditional
methods
and tools:
The
“Ropewalk”
is shown above, where rope has been produced since 1824.
The Ropewalk is an important component of the story of
America and the
sea, as it would be impossible for a sailing vessel to operate without
rope.
The
Shipsmith Shop, below, has been used to
making whaling harpoons and
ship’s fittings since 1885. It is the only ironwork shop for
the whaling
industry still in existence today.

The
Figureheads Exhibit
Mystic
Seaport is the home of a dramatic collection of
figureheads and ships’ carvings. The most romantic and
mysterious of all
artifacts from the age of sail, these figureheads, billetheads and
catheads
demonstrate the extraordinary woodworking skill of their craftsmen -
this one’s
at the top of my list!

The
Maritime Art Gallery
The Maritime Gallery at Mystic Seaport is the nation’s foremost gallery
specializing in contemporary marine art as well as ship models.

Rosenfeld
Collection
With nearly one
million photographs, the Rosenfeld Collection is the largest single
collection
of maritime photography in the world. The stunning works or
art caught in
time by the Rosenfeld family capture the essence of the maritime
experience.
(Rosenfeld shot photography of Rybovich boats for several major
magazines back
in the 1950s so this museum is of special interest for us lovers of
Rybovich!)

The
Trenworgy Planetarium is where you
can go for a quick but fascinating lesson in celestial navigation

Mystic
Aquarium
http://www.mystic.org/browse/what-to-do/mystic-aquarium
Mystic Aquarium is located
near Mystic Seaport’s Museum
of America and the Sea. The Aquarium offers endless
fascination for kids:
the Sea Lion Show, beluga whales, Shark Encounters, along with a
Jellyfish
show: The Ocean in Motion are just a few of the attractions
along with a
wide range of hands-on fun
Kids will also love the Deep
Sea 3-D experience, the Ray
Touch Pool and a huge aviary that houses hundreds of birds of the
Outback. The Beluga Encounter is not to be missed!
Casinos
at Mystic
http://www.mystic.org/at-the-casinos
With
all there is to do by day, Mystic is every bit as
active by night. With Mohegan Sun, Foxwoods and MGM Grand at
Foxwoods,
three of America’s premier casinos, at Mystic Seaport star-studded
evenings are
the norm.
